The German word Heimat does not have an exact translation in English. It refers to much more than a physical place or a home. Heimat expresses a deep sense of belonging, connected to memories, emotions, roots, and personal identity. It can be a real, sensory, or symbolic space where one feels safe, grounded, and at peace.
For this project, we were asked to choose our safe place, whether it was a location, a smell, a piece of music, a memory, or any other personal refuge. I chose the concept of Heimat because it represents, for me, this idea of an inner and emotional safe space.
My journal is based on the mnemos found in Bernard Werber’s book The Pandora’s Box. These mnemos encourage introspection and reflection on universal themes such as memory, identity, and consciousness. I chose to gather all of them into a single journal in order to create a coherent and personal space that reflects my own safe place.
By bringing these mnemos together, the journal becomes a place of comfort and protection — a mental and creative space where thoughts, memories, and emotions meet, directly connected to the notion of Heimat.
